After a bit of amateur soil anaylsis, I have determined that my soil is a sandy loam. Kind of gritty. Doesn't like being in small pieces.
So there you have it, y'all. My amazing 1x1 plot project!
The Assignment
THE ASSIGNMENT:
Choose an area, size 1 meter x 1 meter, and over the course of 10 weeks collect data once a week on the populations and species within the plot. Determine soil type and analyze the deterioration of a fruit sample placed in the plot. Give daily weather reports for the 10 weeks.

I lied this is my last visit. I need some soil for my analysis.
It's freezing! AHHHH!!!!

So, this is probably gonna be my last visit. Sad, I know.
Practically everything is covered in leaves now. And guess what. It snowed. I don't like snow. I despise it with every part of my soul. So yeah. Snow
Plants are dormant. Animals are preparing for winter. Birds migrating south. Yep. My ten. Weeks are up, baby!

My flowers are dead! You have no idea how sad this makes me. ; (
It's a little warmer today than it has been in the past few days, so I'm glad about that. Still barely any rain.
Almost everything is going dormant and I'm pretty sure my thermometer is broken becauseit says 67 degrees fahrenheit again. So either the ground's in a perfect state of equilibrium or it's broken...
The leaves have started to fall, also. Go leaves!

Temps were slightly higher this week than they were last week. Still miserable, though.
I took another ground temperature. It was 67 degrees fahrenheit again.
The leaves have finally started to change. YES!!! Reds and golds and oranges galore!
Other than that, nothing's changed.

Okay, so today I decided to draw one of the grasses that stand near my plot. The pictures on the right are what I deemed presentable to the public :)
So it's been cold and dry and miserable. (Except for running the Race for the Cure yesterday. That was fun.) That poor creek. I hope it gets some water soon.
Anyway... I'm completely surprised that the leaves haven't begun to turn colors yet. It seems unnatural to me.

I honestly don't know why I choose to visit my plot on the absolute coldest days of the week! Ugh, I'm not happy with myself right now.
Honestly, not much has changed. I expect the leaves should start falling soon. That'll be exciting.
Oh, and I finally remembered to take ground temperatures. Today it was 67 degrees Fahrenheit. Though, I did use a 20 year old meat thermometer, so I don't know how accurate it was. :)

Finally got a camera again! YAY!
These flowers are absolutely adorable! I can't figure out what they are (If you know, you can leave a comment, and I'll change it). There's maybe two dozen of them throughout my 1x1 plot and I love them. They are completely white except for the green in the center. (SQUEEEE)
It's cold today, really cold and it's kind of sprinkling now. Go water! But the birds were quite for the first time in all my visits, and it kind of freaked me out.

So, my orange is completely gone. I don't know if an animal took it to eat it, or if it just deteriorated to the point where there is nothing left, but... yeah. My apple, though, is still there. It's soggy with some white spots on it. Frankly I was afraid to touch it or smell it, otherwise I would tell you that too. Sorry.
It's finally cooling off, it was a hot week, this past week, dry too. The ground is doing surprisingly well though, still holding a bit of it's moisture.
Those wildflowers I've shown you are almost completely gone now and the new species isn't quite ready to bloom. Maybe next week.

So today I decided I was going to set out my fruit to see how it deteriorated over a week. I placed my apple and half of a peeled orange on the ground. The orange was at the base of a tree and the orange was out in the open of the clearing. Unfortunately my dad had the camera for work so I couldn't take pictures, but y'all know what apples and oranges look like.
We finally got some rain! Yay! It wasn't much, but the ground isn't as dry as it has been. The creek though, is still looking a low.
The wild flowers have less flowers and seem to be coming to an end of their season, but another set appear to be sprouting.
It wasn't in my area, but across the creek and in the neighboring field, I saw a doe. She was majestic. :)

It was another hot, dry week with highs in the 80s, and 90s. It was even over 100 on Monday.

Today, I looked more around my site and attempted to identify some of the trees around it. Most were maple with a few oaks. A few wildflowers are growing in the grasses. They have very small white, almost purple-ish, flowers and seem to be ground cover. (Photo to the right)
The ground is still very dry and the nearby creek is still very low. I saw a bee or a wasp. I didn't feel like getting close enough to figure which it was.

So, today was my first visit to my 1x1 meter location. It's in E. Des Moines, near Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex.

Today, I was just really getting my bearings, trying to figure out exactly where I wanted my plot to be. (As you can see by the above image, I figured it out)
To say that it was hot, is to put it mildly. The ground was dry, even after the light rain we got yesterday. Even the nearby creek is almost dried up. The grass is pretty brown at this point of the summer.
The birds were happy, I suppose, they were chirping away, the only other sounds were the occasional car driving down Dean/Fairview.
